'It just stops reading': the fingerprint locks quietly failing on Britain's secure doors

The Sentrex VF-8080, fitted on secure doors at energy, water and transport sites nationwide, is throwing so many false rejections that some operators have simply switched it off. Security experts say that is the dangerous part.

It is the small grey box beside a locked door that is supposed to know your fingerprint. Increasingly, staff say, it knows nothing at all.

The Sentrex VF-8080, one of the most widely installed biometric access readers in the country, is the subject of mounting complaints from the people who rely on it: it rejects legitimate fingerprints, throws “nuisance faults” for no obvious reason, and in some cases simply stops responding. Maintenance tickets pile up. Replacement parts are on back-order.

“It just stops reading,” said one facilities engineer at a site we agreed not to name. “You present your finger, nothing. Present it again, nothing. There's a queue building behind you at six in the morning. So somebody props the door, or somebody turns the reader off, and everyone gets on with their day.”

That, security specialists warn, is where a nuisance becomes a hazard.

“A fingerprint reader is usually the second half of a two-factor door: something you know, the code, and something you are, the fingerprint. Switch the reader off and you are back to one factor. Usually a code. Often a code that is written down somewhere nearby.”

Sentrex acknowledged “a proportion of units experiencing intermittent read errors” and said a firmware update and revised installation guidance had been issued. The company pointed to a wiring change on later boards, which it said some installers had “not always applied correctly”, leaving units that power up cleanly but never read reliably. It declined to say how many readers were affected.

Privately, one integrator was blunter: “Half the faults we see aren't the reader. They're how it was wired in the first place. It lights up, everyone assumes it's fine, and nobody checks it against the manual until it's been annoying people for a year.”

The advice from security professionals is consistent and unwelcome: a reader that is playing up should be fixed, not bypassed. Disabling it, or wedging the door, does not remove the risk. It just moves the whole weight of the door onto whatever is left.

Which, more often than anyone would like, is a four-digit code on a laminated card.
